About Us
The Westlock and District Ukrainian Cultural Society started in1975 by Peter and Darlene Skitsko and under the instruction of Diane Ungarian, a former Shumka Dancer, the group celebrated its 25th anniversary in the year 2000. Diane stayed and instructed the group until its short hiatus the following year. The group was restarted in 2007 by Stacey Rinas. During 2007-2009 our group was under the instruction of Collette Hyshka. From 2009-2015 our group had been under the instruction of Denise Chenier and Assistant Instructor Daphne Dowbush. Since 2015 we have Emily Belke from Cheremosh as our instructor, and since 2018 we have Gaige Babiak from Cheremosh as our assistant instructor.
In 2013 the Society decided they needed a new identity and as the area is known for its abundant harvests, we became the Westlock Vrozhay ( translated meaning harvest ) Ukrainian Dancers. Over the years the group has attended dance festivals in Vegreville, Fort Saskatchewan, Athabasca, Grande Prairie, Bonnyville, Calgary, and St. Albert.
In the fall of 2015 the society started a new chapter with the Cheremosh School of Dance, and be part of their Affiliate Dance School Program.
